Compression without losing the transient
Compression changes the level envelope. If a drum loses useful attack, compare less intervention or another timing response at matched loudness. Detector, knee, timing design and the source matter; the same knob value need not behave alike in two compressors.
Hear and inspect the tools in this guide
Loop the same phrase, change one control at a time and compare at similar playback loudness. The linked walkthroughs are product demonstrations, not measurement results for this guide.

Name the envelope job
Decide whether you need steadier phrase level, altered attack, longer sustain or bus cohesion. A setting for one job may be wrong for another. Listen to quiet and loud passages.
Begin with a small useful intervention and compare bypass at similar loudness. A reduction display describes gain change, not whether the groove improved.
Listen to recovery
Compare attack and release together on the actual processor. Slowing an attack control does not guarantee an unchanged transient; detector and knee design also matter.
Listen to how the envelope recovers into the next event. Sustained reduction can flatten contrast, while an audible recovery can impose an unwanted rhythm. Either may also be a deliberate effect.
Compare the whole chain
Makeup gain may make compression seem better merely because playback is louder. Reset the reference after changing threshold, timing or ratio. Inspect bass and vocals before choosing a drum-bus setting.
A parallel path adds routing and compensation considerations. Use the host documented path and do not assume every blend is phase-neutral. Save the setting that supports this performance.

References and comparison method
An explanatory guide based on the linked product specifications and host documentation. Suggested listening steps are a method for your session, not a report of a controlled experiment. Behaviour depends on the release, source and settings.
Use the actual product controls, compare at similar playback loudness and check the result in the arrangement. Settings and behaviour vary by recording and software release.
