Mutant Brass: turn a brass source into a performed hybrid voice
Use Source, Formant, Grain and the resonant-body controls to create brass-led stabs, breathy sustains and an evolving texture.

Begin with a recognisable articulation
Mutant Brass is a MIDI instrument built from a brass-source sample pack, granular treatment and a resonant body. It is useful when a brass-like attack should become a more unusual playable voice. Begin with the intended notes and a restrained setting where the source's articulation is easy to hear.
Use a phrase containing short notes and a held ending. The short notes reveal how the attack reads in the arrangement, while the sustain reveals the grain and body contributions. Keep the harmony available so a dramatic timbral shift still belongs to the song.
Give each sound-shaping axis a separate job
Source moves through the brass material. Formant shifts its vocal-like register while the MIDI notes remain the performed pitch reference. Grain changes continuity and texture, while Body, Geometry and Breath develop the resonant contribution. Start with one change at a time.
The mod wheel adds to Breath, with the combined value bounded. Leave room on the Breath control when you want the wheel to create an audible increase. Drive, Squeeze, Delay and Room finish the instrument's presentation; Delay Sync chooses tempo-linked or free delay behaviour.
Workflow one: a short brass-led answer
Use a sparse melodic or chord response in a gap left by the main vocal or instrument.
- Keep Grain and Body restrained while choosing a useful Source position.
- Use Formant to find the register of character that fits the answer, checking all notes of the phrase.
- Bring Body and Geometry in for a specific resonant contribution.
- Use Drive or Squeeze only where the part needs a more forceful surface.
- Set the final level and hear the answer beside the main phrase.
If the attack loses definition or a resonant note carries into the next line, reduce the relevant contribution before adding more ambience. A short answer can have a distinctive voice without becoming a sustained wall of sound.
Workflow two: a breath-controlled held line
Use a sustained melody and a controller that sends the intended mod-wheel information.
- Choose a Source and Formant relationship that carries the melody clearly.
- Set Body and Geometry while holding several notes, not just one.
- Leave Breath below its upper limit and use the wheel to add air during the phrase.
- Introduce Grain gradually if the line should develop beyond a recognisable source sustain.
- Add Delay or Room after the performance response is useful.
A breath gesture should feel like part of the phrasing. If the wheel seems to do little, check the starting Breath amount before increasing other controls. A bounded sum leaves less headroom for an added controller when the knob is already near its limit.
A creative use: the same phrase moves from brass to texture
Keep a sparse motif recognisable at first, then increase the grain or resonant contribution on its final repetition. Use host automation or a supported performance route for the gesture and print an alternate version if detailed editing helps its placement. The MIDI phrase can remain constant while its identity changes.
Hear the transition back to the direct arrangement. A strongly granular or resonant version can be effective for a short bridge, but it may need a different level or shorter duration than the original brass-led phrase.
Check source, body and effects separately
Before committing, compare the source-led sound with the resonant and grain contributions reduced, then restore them and hear the whole line. Revisit the effect tails and Delay Sync choice around the song's tempo and section ending.
Keep Mutant Brass when the hybrid contributions have distinct roles in a playable part. It generates its own sound on an instrument track; an external recorded horn does not become its source merely by placing the plugin on that audio channel. Try the same phrase at a quieter velocity before printing.
