Coil in brief

What it is
A spring reverb, modelled from the physics of a real spring tank.
What it does
Choose one to six springs, set the decay, and use Drive and the high-pass to control how hard the tank is hit.
What it sounds like
Proper spring: the boing on a snare, the drip on a guitar, a small, springy splash behind a vocal.

Try a short guitar or percussion passage, adjust the spring count, and blend the return under the source.

How it is built

Coil models the physics of a spring tank, with one to six spring paths. Decay runs from 0.1 to 10 seconds, and Damping HF darkens the tail. The high-pass filters what hits the tank, from 20 to 800 Hz, so low notes do not set off a rumble. Drive pushes the springs harder. Width sets how much side signal reaches the tank, and Wet Mix blends the return with the dry sound.

The high-pass filters the tank, not your guitar

HPF only filters what goes into the springs. The dry guitar keeps all its low end. Raise it when a low note sets the whole tank booming, then listen to the tail after that note, not the moment you move the knob. There is no pre-delay knob, so put a short delay before Coil if you want a gap.

What is it for?
Spring reverb for guitar, electric piano, snare, brass or a sparse vocal: the boing, the drip and the splash.
Where does it go in the chain?
On a send for most parts, or on the channel with Wet Mix low for a guitar or keys sound. A send also lets one accent trigger a longer tail.
Does it run in my DAW?
Windows VST3, and VST3 or Audio Unit on Mac, in any host that loads those formats. Minimum system versions are listed above. There is no AAX.
