Fat Berry DSP / Reverb plug-ins Buying Guide

Give a sound a place to live.

Reverb plug-ins establish front-to-back depth, early-reflection room size, and harmonic decay tail in a mix. Choose physical spring or plate character when a track needs audible vintage texture, or sculpted algorithmic rooms and halls when vocals and instruments need clean spatial separation. Coil: Add spring reverb, from a short splash to a wider wash. Knee Verb: Three reverbs in one: Plate, Spring and Church. Big Knobs: A character reverb with stepped Decay, separate low and high decay, and Predelay. Start with a short return behind the source and lengthen it until the space becomes clear. Listen for the gap between the dry note and the tail: that gap can keep a vocal close while the room feels large. A percussion fill may suit a spring, while sustained chords may need a smoother bed. Check the tail across the next phrase, and reduce the return if it masks the rhythm or the words. Try every paid option free for 30 days on your own tracks.

Use Cases & Fit

Who reverb plug-ins are for — and how to choose

Reverb is how a flat stereo recording gains a third dimension: distance. The ratio of direct sound to early reflections tells the listener how close the performer is, while the decay time and high-frequency damping describe the size and surface material of the space.

FIT 01

Studio Application 1

Vocal mixers who need front-to-back depth that keeps lyric consonants upfront while adding lush sustain.

FIT 02

Studio Application 2

Guitarists, keyboardists, and dub/indie producers seeking authentic spring bounce, plate shimmer, or dark atmospheric halls.

FIT 03

Studio Application 3

Engineers who want fast damping and pre-delay controls that prevent muddy low-mid reverb build-up.

At the desk

How do you choose and dial in reverb plug-ins?

01

Decide how close the source should feel

Short early reflections with low wet mix place an instrument in a believable studio room without pushing it backward. Long, diffuse tails create cinematic distance and occupy significant arrangement space.

02

Protect the beginning of the sound with pre-delay

20–45 ms of pre-delay lets vocal consonants and snare transients speak cleanly before the reverberant field arrives, preserving intimacy even with generous decay times.

03

Make the tail finish before the next phrase

Time your decay so the reverb tail drops at least 15–20 dB before the next chord change or lyric line enters, keeping the harmonic floor clean.

04

Filter the return like an instrument

Roll off below 150–250 Hz and tame harsh 4–8 kHz sibilance going into or out of the reverb so the tail adds warmth rather than mud or spit.

Signal-chain placement

Use on an auxiliary send (100% wet) after a de-esser and high-pass filter when sharing space across tracks, or as an insert with wet/dry mix for dedicated creative spring or ambient effects.

How we test at -16 LUFS

Listening tests & common mix mistakes to avoid

Primary listening check

Mute the reverb return during the densest chorus, then slowly bring the return fader up until you feel the sense of space expand without hearing the tail as a separate layer.

TEST PROTOCOL

Four-step studio audition checklist

  • Audition on anexposed vocal phrase or snare hit in solo to set pre-delay and decay time to the song tempo.
  • Un-solo and check the 200–500 Hz region across the whole mix to verify the reverb tail is not clouding bass and guitar clarity.
  • Switch the master output to mono to confirm the reverb return still supports depth when stereo width collapses.
  • Listen on headphones at low volume to catch metallic ringing or unnatural tail cutoffs during quiet song endings.
PITFALLS

Common mistakes when using reverb plug-ins

  • Putting a different long reverb on every track until nothing sounds close to the listener.
  • Sending un-de-essed vocals into a bright reverb, turning every "s" into a splashy burst.
  • Leaving low-frequency energy below 120 Hz in the reverb return.

Frequently Asked Questions

Reverb plug-ins FAQ

Is there a free reverb plug-in in the Fat Berry DSP catalogue?

The current Reverb category contains paid plug-ins: Coil (/plugins/coil, $29.99 USD regular price); Knee Verb (/plugins/knee-verb, $39.99 USD regular price); Big Knobs (/plugins/big-knobs, $39.99 USD regular price). Each has a perpetual 3-machine licence for Windows VST3 and macOS VST3/AU.

Should I run reverb on an aux send or directly as a channel insert?

Use an aux send when putting multiple tracks into a shared room and EQing the return independently. Use a channel insert when the reverb is an integral part of a single instrument tone, such as spring reverb on a guitar.

How do I calculate reverb pre-delay and decay time from song BPM?

Divide 60,000 by your BPM to get one quarter note in milliseconds. A 1/64th or 1/32nd note (18–45 ms) makes a natural vocal pre-delay, while a one-bar or half-bar duration keeps decay tails rhythmic.
