Fat Berry DSP / Tape plug-ins Buying Guide

Weight, wear and movement, on purpose.

Tape plug-ins model magnetic hysteresis, head bump low-mid warmth, high-frequency self-erasure rounding, and mechanical wow/flutter pitch movement. Choose a mastering-grade deck like Mastering Tape Suite for subtle bus cohesion, Ape Tape for rich track saturation, or tape delay/lo-fi tools for worn nostalgic texture. Mastering Tape Suite: Add tape colour and shape the dynamics of a mix or bus. Ape Tape: Add tape colour, then blend it with your original signal. Choose a familiar track and compare a short passage at the same playback loudness. Listen to the low end, the leading edge of a snare and the space around the vocal. Increase the recording level gradually, then use output trim to separate colour from loudness. A track can take stronger treatment than a complete mix. Check the quiet introduction as well as the chorus, especially when noise or movement is part of the sound you choose. Try every paid option free for 30 days on your own tracks.

Use Cases & Fit

Who tape plug-ins are for — and how to choose

Magnetic tape is never a single effect: it combines soft harmonic saturation, frequency-dependent compression at high frequencies, a resonant low-frequency head bump, and subtle mechanical speed variance. Different Fat Berry DSP tape plug-ins emphasise specific parts of that behaviour for tracking, mixing, or mastering.

FIT 01

Studio Application 1

Mix and mastering engineers seeking cohesive low-mid weight and gentle high-frequency transient rounding on digital recordings.

FIT 02

Studio Application 2

Lo-fi, hip-hop, and indie producers who want authentic wow, flutter, bias wear, and tape delay degradation.

FIT 03

Studio Application 3

Engineers comparing Ape Tape with Mastering Tape Suite for tape saturation and transport modelling.

At the desk

How do you choose and dial in tape plug-ins?

01

Match tape speed and bias to the source

Higher virtual speeds preserve crisp transients and extended highs for master buses; slower speeds warm up harsh overheads, brittle synths, and electric guitars while shifting the head bump lower.

02

Protect snare and vocal transients

Tape naturally rounds sharp high-frequency edges. Compare the consonant clarity of your vocal and the crack of your snare with the tape stage bypassed before committing to heavy input drive.

03

Judge low-mid accumulation across the whole mix

Adding similar low-mid colour across many tracks can change the combined balance. Reserve full-range tape weight for the tracks or buses that genuinely sound thin.

04

Separate harmonic drive from mechanical flutter

On a stereo master bus, keep wow and flutter near zero so pitch stays rock solid; on solo keys, pads, or guitar loops, increase mechanical movement for organic character.

Signal-chain placement

On individual tracks, place tape saturation after corrective EQ to round peaks before compression; on buses and masters, place after bus EQ/compression and immediately before the final true-peak brickwall limiter.

How we test at -16 LUFS

Listening tests & common mix mistakes to avoid

Primary listening check

Level-match the tape path to the dry path within 0.1 dB. If you only prefer the tape plug-in when it is louder, pull the output trim down and re-evaluate the high-end roll-off and low-mid density.

TEST PROTOCOL

Four-step studio audition checklist

  • Start with input drive at unity and listen solely to the frequency contour and head bump before pushing into saturation.
  • Slowly raise input drive while trimming output gain until transient peaks soften slightly without audible crunch on bass notes.
  • Listen specifically to cymbals, hi-hats, and vocal sibilance to confirm high-frequency saturation sounds silky rather than smeared.
  • Check sustained piano or synth chords when adjusting wow and flutter so pitch drift stays musical.
PITFALLS

Common mistakes when using tape plug-ins

  • Driving sub-heavy 808s hard into tape saturation without checking low-end phase and harmonic mud.
  • Leaving excessive wow/flutter active on a full mix bus, blurring stereo imaging and pitch center.
  • Putting the exact same tape preset on every channel until the mix sounds veiled.

Frequently Asked Questions

Tape plug-ins FAQ

What is the difference between Ape Tape and Mastering Tape Suite?

Ape Tape ($29.99 USD regular price) offers Classic and Modern tape, 15 and 30 ips, alignment trims, Mix and Delta. Mastering Tape Suite ($59.99 USD regular price) combines tape saturation, flux-domain emphasis, head-bump and wow/flutter transport modelling with EQ, compression and an output/limiter stage.

Does tape saturation reduce peak levels before a limiter?

Yes. Tape hysteresis and high-frequency compression gently round short transient spikes, often giving your final brickwall limiter 1 to 2 dB of extra headroom at the same perceived loudness.

Can I use Fat Berry DSP tape plug-ins on both Windows and Mac?

Windows VST3 and Mac VST3 / Audio Unit installers are available where listed on each product page. Check the individual tape plug-in’s installer requirements rather than assuming one minimum macOS version for the range.
