A beat session from empty project to arranged loop

A beat is easier to finish when the parts arrive in an order. Drums first gives the session a grid and a feel; bass next defines the weight; harmony and melody give the loop somewhere to go; delay and space turn eight bars into an arrangement. None of this requires a full orchestra of plug-ins.

The order

Step by step

Change the order if the material asks for it. The reasons are in each step.

  1. 1. Choose the drum source

Drum Berry is a 16-pad instrument with 32 kits and five synthesis machines. FB-Eight builds each part from two synthesis engines. Start with the one whose pads or programming workflow matches how you hear the pattern.

  2. 2. Design the low end

LOW puts seven engines behind one set of nine knobs and one shared ladder filter. Whisper of Satan targets bass resonance; Cranberry generates subharmonic bands separately for left and right. Use the instrument for the note and the processors only if the low end needs help.

  3. 3. Add one harmonic part

FB-XD is a four-voice synth with a 16-step sequencer; FB-985 is wavetable-first; Nana is monophonic and semi-modular. Pick one and let it carry the loop. A second harmonic part can wait until the arrangement needs it.

  4. 4. Turn the loop into an arrangement

Copy The Dog has 22 delay and reverb modes on one faceplate; Space Cake is a dual-engine delay with Tape, BBD and Digital characters. Use them to make the transition bars and the space around the vocal, not to fill every gap.

Listening check

Loop the eight bars and remove one part at a time. If the beat still works without a part, that part is arrangement rather than foundation. Keep the foundation and make the rest earn its entrance.

FAQ

Questions about this chain

Do I need a separate bass plug-in if the synth already has a bass patch?
Not necessarily. A synth bass can carry the low end on its own. A dedicated bass instrument or subharmonic processor is useful when the part needs a different playing response or when the low end is inconsistent across notes.
Should I mix while I produce a beat?
Keep the balance roughly right as you go, but leave the detailed mix until the arrangement is decided. Plug-ins that sound good on an eight-bar loop can stop working when the full arrangement arrives.
How do I stop a loop sounding like a loop?
Change one thing every eight bars: remove a part, add a transition, change the drum pattern, or let the delay run. Arrangement is what makes a repeated pattern feel intentional.
